An exceptional example of late-19th-century French decorative metalwork, this figural double inkwell showcases the exuberant craftsmanship. Cast in heavy spelter with a deep, aged bronze finish, the composition centers upon a putto bearing a laurel wreath, framed by mythological griffins and scrolling acanthus ornament in high relief. Dual inkwells with fitted lids and original black ceramic liners. Inkwells of this quality were produced during France’s Belle Époque, often for the desks of scholars, artists, or gentlemen of letters.
